final blog
For my grade 12 class project, I worked on a 2007 Honda Civic that was donated to my school. The owner told us that he
had to put oil in regularly and could tell something was wrong. The problem with the engine was that it would burn oil and
informed us that he did not want to spend the money to fix it. Also, we found out the clutch was worn out as well as the
engine which meant I had to take out the engine and do an engine/ transmission rebuild. My goal was to finish taking out
the engine before November and have it built and ready to go back in the car by the end of the semester. I was looking
forward to getting this project done and learning not only how to fix the engine, but getting the chance to blog and explain
the processes to doing so.
The problem with the car was that the engine was burning oil. After doing research, I found that one possible cause of the
burning oil could be the piston rings. If the piston rings can not seal the cylinder wall, then oil will leak into the combustion
chamber where it will burn. I had taken all the spark plugs out and did a dry compression test and wrote the results down.
I then had to add a few squirts of oil into each piston and did a wet compression test, and wrote the results down.
One problem I ran into was taking off the shift linkages. The problem I had with taking them off were the 2 little retainer clips
that held them down. The way I solved this problem was by using a pry bar and a hammer to lift them.
I learned how all the parts of an engine come together and play a role in the running of the engine. It basically is like a
giant puzzle. When faced with a problem, I would try a few things instead of just asking my teacher. I noticed that I was
more prepared to try and problem solve first. Other times, I would involve my teacher because I did not want to break a
part.
Since I had to work on this car alone instead of as a group of 4, I had to manage my time and work fast. The expectation
was to have the engine in the car before the Christmas break and then fix any problems after. But I was able to put the
engine back in the car and connected all the pieces to the engine. I also was able to test the car and had it up and running
with no problem other than replacing one spark plug before the break. I have learned a lot more than I would have
thought, probably because I had to do all the tasks. I also learned that things will not always go perfectly as you expect
them to. So you need to have the patience and ability to work through the problem and resolve it.
